An Innocent Plea
I went to the party, Mom,
I remember what you said.
You told me not to drink,
So I drank soda instead.
I really felt proud inside,
The way you said I would.
I didn’t drink and drive, Mom,
Even though others said I should.
I know I did the right thing
I know you are always right.
Now the party is finally ending.
Everyone was driving out of sight,
As I got into my car,
I know I’d get home in one piece
Because of the way you reared me,
So responsible and sweet.
I started to drive away
As sober as can be.
The other car was speeding
And swerved into me.
As I lay there on the pavement,
I hear the cop say,
“The other guy is drunk”
And now I have to pay.
Mom, I wish you could get here soon.
I’m lying here dying
The only comfort I can get
Is through my own crying
There is blood all around me,
And most of its mine.
I can hear the medic say,
I’ll die in a short time.
I just wanted to tell you, Mom,
I swear I didn’t drink
It was the others,
The others didn’t think.
The guy who hit me is walking,
And I don’t think its fair
That I’m lying here dying
And all he can do is stare.
He made the mistake
But he doesn’t care.
He caused the wreck,
And he’s still alive.
Tell my brother not to cry
Tell Daddy to be brave
And when I go to heaven, Mom,
Put “Daddy’s Girl” on my grave
Someone probably told him
Not to drink and drive.
If only he had listened, Mom,
I would still be alive.
I can’t see anything now
Its all going black
If I had a chance to change this
I would definitely go back.
My breath is getting shorter,
But I’m not scared
Please don’t cry for me
I know I’m prepared.
I have one last question, Mom,
Before I say goodbye.
I didn’t drink and drive,
So why am I the one to die?
